Phonics and Early Reading:

Phonics is taught through a systematic approach using the Read Write Inc programme. Children are taught to connect sounds with mnemonic pictures: words with their meanings and stories with the sounds they know. The children learn the alphabetic code. At first they learn one way to read the 40+ sounds and blend them into words, then they learn to read the same sounds with alternative graphemes

Children read books, which are closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics and tricky words. They build up fluency and confidence, which allows them to become successful readers. Once pupils have passed the Year 1 Phonics screen, they read a broader range of books, enabling them to further develop their inferential reading skills.
